Clara Haskil (Piano)
Clara Haskil began her career late in life and consequently only left a few recordings to posterity. But perhaps it is precisely for this reason that the Rumanian pianist’s recordings possess a virtually magical aura.
Her recording of Domenico Scarlatti's Sonatas, works »born of the very essence of the keyboard instrument« as Otto Schumann put it, has taken on legendary status. Impressively sure as to style and always careful to preserve the baroque clarity of these unique pieces, Clara Haskil allows the playful, lithe piano miniatures to unfold before us.The pianist conjures not only moments of delicate expression from her instrument but is also capable of daring, emotional outbreaks. The tonal character of her instrument, a “crossbreed” between a harpsichord and a historical hammerklavier, is absolutely ideal.
One may well ask whether the good, old mono recording technique is not better suited to preserve piano music than stereophony. With such fresh and spacious sound reproduction, no one minds becoming a mono fan.
